Tips & Advice
Tired of committing the time, energy and expense of recruiting to your team, only to find out that your “best fit” was far from it? Download our Free Top 10 Tips for Recruitment & Selection, to raise your chances of getting it right first time.
Top 10 Tips for Recruitment & Selection
- Adopt a de-selection strategy first. Weed out the time-wasters by asking applicants to conduct a simple exercise on the phone or online.
- Be absolutely sure what your team needs. Use PRISM to profile the job and highlight the key skills and qualities you require.
- Use PRISM again to profile your short-listed or second interview candidates - compare these to your job profile to give you targeted interview questions. (See case study).
- Is the “competency” approach really working for you? Just because someone has done a job before, doesn’t make them suited to that role. Finding a candidate with the natural strengths and potential will reward you and them in the long run.
- Review the language in your job adverts - are you attracting the right kinds of people?
- Prepare a clear and unambiguous job description. Ensure that this fits the ambitions of the organisation in the future as well as the strengths of the existing team.
- Allow the team to meet the interview candidates - their reaction is as valuable as the interview itself.
- Don’t attempt trick questions in the interview, it reflects badly on you as an employer and makes the interviewee even more uncomfortable. If you want to see the true person, be fair, relaxed and well-prepared.
- Reward existing staff who recommend the perfect addition to your team.
- Speed up the process of making this a productive addition to the team by creating a comprehensive induction and running some team-development activities.
