- Match the person to the role - we are all much more productive when we are doing a job that calls on our strengths and provides a sense of achievement.
- Be clear about your expectations - everything from timekeeping, to language, behaviour, personal calls and internet use.
- Re-visit your team’s job descriptions. Is this a fair reflection of the job they are doing, or has this evolved into something quite different? (consult your HR support before you make any changes).
- Set good quality targets and monitor progress. Celebrate success and offer support when things start to slip.
- Give promising staff a mini-promotion. Ask them to head up a special project team, chair a meeting, cover for a more senior colleague, or act as mentor.
- Don’t have all the answers. Even if you think you know what’s best, ask your team for their suggestions and ideas. Fresh thinking never hurt and it gives a sense of ownership to the wider business.
- Manage people in and out of the business. Provide excellent inductions for new team members as well as supported, structured departures for those who are leaving.
- Along with annual appraisals, conduct 360-degree profiles on your entire team to demonstrate how they are perceived by colleagues, customers and management.
- Focus forward. Don’t ponder on what’s gone before, learn the lessons and move on.
